Laura Orguč and Kilian Jornet Burgada win the Vertical Race

Font Blanca day two still under the sign of the Spaniard Kilian Jornet who, after his individual race win on Saturday doubles up with a gold medal also in the first vertical race of this year’s ISMF Skimountaineering World Cup. On the Andorran snow and under a beautiful cloudless sky, the former Olympic cross-country skiing champion Laura Orguè Vila won the women race. Today’s itinerary featured a positive altitude difference of 730 m, the same as the senior men, senior women and junior men events. The junior women competed on a track with 500-m altitude difference.

Right at the start of the race the Italian Michele Boscacci tries to lose the chasing group by taking the lead. In the final part of the event, though, the Catalan and the young Swiss talent Remi Bonnet caught up and overtook the Azzurro. This was the first win of the day for the Catalan ace with a time of 26’50”. Bonnet finished second (first among the Espoir) in 27’14”, while the Italian athlete conquered the lower step of the podium in 27’22”. The day’s top ten features Martin Anthamatten, Anton Palzer, Mathéo Jacquemoud, Werner Marti, Robert Antonioli, Lorenzo Holzknecht and Valentin Favre. 

As regards the women race, thanks to her skills as a formed cross-country skier, Laura Orguè Vila won the event in 32’10”, ahead of Emelie Forsberg (32’43”) and Victoria Kruezer (32’45”). The fourth to cross the finish line was Claudia Galicia Cotrina, followed by Marta Garcia Farres. Then, in order of arrival, Laetitia Roux, Katia Tomatis, Jennifer Fiechter and Alba De Silvestro. The young Italian was once again first among the Espoir. 

As for the Juniors Davide Magnini and Giulia Compagnoni held their national flag high as they both struck gold. The young athlete of CS Esercito ended the men race in 29’06, getting the better of Arnaud Gasser and Samuel Equy. As concerns women, Compagnoni made a stand with a final time of 22’50”, which allowed her to beat her country fellow woman Giulia Murada and the Austrian Verena Streitberger. The two-day Andorran adventure is finished but the ISMF World Cup will be back in a month with the second Italian event, the Valtellina Orobie that will be held on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 January
