LAUSANNE, 26th January – Emotion number two. The 2017 ISMF world Cup takes its second stage in France in the Mediterranean side of the Pyrenees. They plateau of Capcir and Cerdagne and the peaks of Canigou and Puigmal will frame an Individual race, the second of the season, and a Sprint, the first in the 2017 agenda. The area, in the regional park of the Catalan Pyrenees, is some two hours far from the principality of Andorra where the world Cup opening was celebrated last week end. The environment is wild and remote, the charm is that of a well kept secret where the white of the peaks is just crossed by the yellow of a poetic mountain railway – the “train jaune” -, the highest in France. Welcome at the feet of Cambre d’Aze: they call it the “donkey’s back” and, up 2750 metres high, its name is a guarantee of a long, beautiful, ridge to play as a back ground to the next races. The ski resort itself is divided in two sides, the area of Eyne, a cosy village at 1583 m, named by a river flowing nearby and Saint Pierre dels Forcat, where the Loc – organizing Committee, in cooperation with Ffme - the French federation, has worked hard to design the perfect conditions for both races scheduled in the week end. «They had important and continuous snow fall, along the past week», said Armando Mariotta, ISMF president, «And now the conditions are great».

The result? Powder and power is the answer for the two races that have just reached up to 125 athletes from 14 countries in the Individual, scheduled on Saturday 28th. The nations enrolled for the Sunday Sprint are 13 with 120 contestants in the starting list. «Cambre D’Aze has a long tradition in ski mountaineering: here the legendary race “La trace catalane” was created 30 years ago» they say from Ffme. And today the ISMF has just took over a skimo story that combines men attitude and respect for nature. The area has a great biodiversity, including two species of capercaille, eagles and hawks. High as birds our champions will climb: «I had great memories of Cambre D’Aze, where I used to train when I was living in Font Romeu», said Kilian Jornet Burgada, winner of the last year Individual ranking. With such a “domestic” endorsement, most of the teams, already arrived a couple of days ago directly from Andorra, to taste the terrain. The early Individual ranking of the season sees Anton Palzer from Germany ahead of the Italian Damiano Lenzi and Xavier Gachet from France. The “Blues” can be optimistic: Laetitia Roux, discipline winner in 2016, won the opening in Font Blanca, thus leading the Individual ranking, followed by another French, Axelle Mullaret. Third is Emilie Forsberg: not only the Swedish champion made it to the Individual podium but she also won the first Vertical with a “sprint” attack which she will try to repeat this week end.
