LAUSANNE, 2nd March 2017 -  Sun and some tiny clouds gathered in the skies over Piancavallo basin to welcome the last racing day of the 2017 world Championships. The shade did not cover the emotions after a whole week of skiing and friendships. More than 50 gentlemen from 13 countries and 30 ladies form 10 countries plus some 9 youth teams were the last contenders of these Champs. From Canada to Japan, from Norway to Romania they definitely knew how to rally! A couple of minutes to give your own contribute in your leg and less than half an hour to grab the last available medals: this is the essence of any Relay race, a team game built on strategy and harmony. And it couldn’t be a better way to finish the Champs: because a shared medal is even more shining.

The youth race saw Switzerland, France and Italy on podium. The women senior gave another podium, in the most important position, to France who took gold thanks to perfect handing off among the three mates Valentine Fabre, Axelle Mollaret and Laetitia Roux who was right back after attending the CISM winter games in Sochi. Italy also got another podium and rounded in third position thanks to the trio of Martina Valmassoi, Giulia Compagnoni and Alba de Silvestro to run the last demanding leg. Spain managed to nail the middle position and got silver with a “fast and furious” bunch composed by Marta Garcia Farres, Mireia Miro Varela and Claudia Galicia Cotrina. The track was set in Busa del Sauc, in the skiing resort area with two tiny ascents of 80 and 85 D+ metres. When it came to the senior challenge the Grand finale atmosphere fired up audience and athletes. In the end it was again Switzerland to colour gold the expectations of the four musketeers Iwan Arnold, Werner Marti, Yannick Ecoeur and Andreas Steindl. Second position for the “azzurri” poker of Nadir Maguet, Michele Boscacci, Robert Antonioli and Damiano Lenzi at his fourth medal in the world event. Bronze medal for the skimo Spanish kings Inigo Marques Martinez de Albornoz, Marc Rubirola Pinsach, Oriol Cardona Coll and Kilian Jornet Burgada who will be back home with a gold, a silver and a bronze medal.

We believe that the main feature of this event is the great variety of countries which attended the Champssaid Armando Mariotta and Marco Mosso, ISMF president and Vp respectively - “Celebrating medals from far countries is the greatest victory for skimo and for sport and it is something we are very proud. We would light to thanks the Loc organizing Committee for the great job they carried out”.

“Conditions have not always been easy: we fought against lack of snow first, too much snow later on, wind, rain and fogechoed Diego Svalduz and Vittorio Romor from the LOCbut we managed to deliver the best races we could: we will be always there for the skimo movement”.

The nations ranking gives and undisputable victory to Italy, followed by Switzerland and France.

Now it is time to go back to the world Cup which will host a stage in three weeks’ time in Piedmont, north west of Italy. Meanwhile the LGC - Le grande Course circuit will start its journey with Pierra Menta race scheduled from next Wednesday, 8th March, in France. Stay skimo and Alé!
